Paradise Lost by John Milton

Paradise LostParadise Lost by John Milton
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This story is an epic poem about the battle between good and evil; it emphasises free will and shows how the choices result in rewards or punishment.
It includes the most colourful elements of suffering and retribution, and combines humanity with the ethereal as angels can pass through fire, soar in the air, penetrate walls and are impervious to normal physics. His Heaven is similar to Earth but on a much grander scale, while his Hell brings together darkness and terrible shadows with perpetual suffering.

In my book Catacombs of the Damned I have described what Milton would have envisaged as Hell when looking at the panel in the church.

If you can find a copy which is illustrated by Gustave Dore, then you will find that Milton’s writing is complemented by Dore’s darkly brooding pictures which add so much to the story.

Catacombs of the Damned is available in paperback and for Kindle:
